Jeffrey Baker, MD, FACS
Surgeon & Founder, Baker Bariatrics, LLC
Being on the forefront of innovative ideas and new technology, Dr. Jeffrey D. Baker redirected his focus in Bariatrics from strictly the open Roux en Y Gastric Bypass Operation to include the minimally invasive surgery as well. Training in Michigan under the guidance of a leading surgical practice pioneering this technique, Dr. Baker shortly thereafter credentialed in this procedure. He has since performed over 900 operations laparoscopically and is now sought out by other surgeons to train them in this specialty. The call for this method, being less invasive to the patient and allowing a faster recovery time, continues to grow. Additionally, Dr. Baker recognized that the adjustable gastric banding procedure (LapBand™ and REALIZE Band™) was also a viable alternative to the Roux en Y operation and, in 2005, he began offering this operation to his patients. Most recently, Dr. Baker has beem trained and certified in the gastric sleeve procedure. This procedure has been available as the first of a two step process for the severely obese patients. However, the sleeve is now being recognized on it's own as a viable alternative for our patients. With some insurance companies now allowing for coverage of the sleeve, it is now the newest surgical choice in our practice. The continual expansion in our practice and surgical expertise and techniques has provided the Baker Bariatrics’ patients a choice in their own personal weight loss efforts. Dr. Baker is committed, both professionally as well as philosophically, to staying on the leading edge of Bariatrics. This is the Baker Bariatrics difference.
An alumnus of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Baker completed his residency training in general surgery and trauma surgery at Hennepin County Medical Center. Additionally, Dr. Baker is nationally published both in minimally invasive and in general surgery, having contributed to determining the scientific basis of why patients might have less pain following laparoscopic operations.
His awards include:
- Centers of Excellence, Surgeon – American Society of Bariatric Surgery, Surgical Review Corporation
- Melvin P. Bubrick, MD, Surgical Resident Teaching Award
- Outstanding Contributions to Medical Student Education Award – Rural Physician Associate Program.
His credentials include:
- Diplomat, American College of Surgeons
- Member, American Society for Bariatric Surgery
- Member, Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons
- Member, American Medical Association
- Member, Minnesota Medical Association
- Member, Hitchcock Surgical Society, Hennepin County Medical Center
Born in 1958, Dr. Jeff Baker grew up in the Twin Cities' northern suburbs. Jeff, and his wife Kris, have seven children ages 21, 15, 13, 13, 11, 9 and 9. His interests include his family, competitive downhill skiing and competitive road cycling.
